In today’s world messages are constantly being sent to us in a variety of different ways from word of mouth, advertisement, articles, email, social networking, and many more. Just thinking about all the ways people are trying to get noticed hurts my head. Yet in your work, whether it is running a non-profit or being apart of one with a program and service, the very last thing you want is to get lost in the crowd. This week’s blog is about 3 ways not to get lost in the crowd.
Many years ago when I was active in theatre in High School, the cast of our shows always had a saying before we would step out of the room and take our place for opening night. “Be Loud! Be Seen! Be Great! Drama Forever!” This simple, yet powerful mantra can also apply so that you don’t get lost in the crowd of messages.
Be Loud! Your organization is bringing a gift to this world and do not be embarrassed about it. People need to know who and what you do. They need to know they need to go to you for help or give money to support your cause. How are you being loud? With so many messages coming to people every day, is your voice being lost in the crowd? How are you being loud? Speak up, be louder! Be creative in how your voice could be heard.
Be Seen! I have not seen documentation to back this up, however have heard this stat many times, “it takes 7 touches for people to remember you.” If you don’t want to get lost in the crowd of messages, you need to make sure people can see you. What is your online presence like? What about in person? Are you making an effort to go to where people are and introducing who and what you offer, so people know you are there? Are you keeping in touch with donors, partners and those you serve on a regular basis?
Be Great! Being great sounds simple, yet it is the hardest. Greatness takes time, resources, and the ability to strive for excellence. To be great, your works will be able to speak on their own as a testimony of who and what you do. If you are meeting the needs and caring about those you serve, those who benefit become a walking testimonial of your greatness. These people know and experience the power behind the works of your organization. So my advice for not getting lost in the crowd of messages is to be great by just being who you are. Be the best you can, and those who experience this gift you offer will share it with others.
Be Loud! Be Seen! Be Great! Three simple concepts to help you not get lost in the crowd of messages and be remembered. One last advice and one that is humbly made is to stay in contact. None of the ideas behind being Loud, Seen or Great will make any difference if you are forgotten or disappear. I have personally made this mistake of disappearing. I recently started a graduate program that has taken many more hours than originally anticipated. Some areas of my life have not received the attention they deserved included staying in contact with everyone with relevant information through this weekly blog. Learn from my mistake, stay in contact and if you do fumble along the way, remember, we are human and pick yourself back up, you have a gift to share with the world and the world is waiting for you to be great!
Be Loud! Be Seen! Be Great! And you won’t get lost in the crowd!
Till next week,
